Dead Man's Shadow by egoodwinart Dead Man's Shadow by egoodwinart
Here's an oil painting I did, creating an alternate cover painting for the book "Haunted Teachers" by Alan Zullo. I took one of the stories from the book in which a teacher who used to be a lumberjack was sentenced to hang after he was convicted for murder. Being an innocent man, he cursed the town for finding him guilty by saying he would haunt the town until the guilty man died. After he was hanged, the cast shadow of him on the wall of the school was permanently left on the school until years later when the true murderer died at war. This was supposedly a true story, as many people came even from other towns to see the eerie shadow on the wall. For reference for this painting, I bought some rope, made a noose, and took a picture of my friend Evan with the noose on. I then took pictures of a brick wall and photoshopped the outline of Evan and the noose onto the wall and then worked from that composition. I worked on masonite board that I sanded and gessoed with a texture. This photo isn't quite as crisp as I'd like, but here it is.

Nice work. You know, a kid I know did a piece similar, except the POV was from the hanged person. You could figure out that the person was hung by an upturned chair and a shadow like the one you did. What's funny though - is that he used a reference pic he took (to get the POV right) and included the shadow. But he took the pic when his feet were on the ground - so the shadow was in the wrong place. Great work.

Love the brick background!
I think it doesn't quite look like he's hanging - probably because you didn't want to kill your friend Evan, but maybe you should have exaggerated the angle of the neck a bit more to make it seem like he was actually hanging and not just standing with a noose around his neck.
Great detail though - you are quite a skilled painter :D

Haha, I like the way you described prepping the pic. "I got a noose ready and made someone else try it on." That's a pretty good picture all the same, and the story is pretty creepy. o.o
