Finally, this piece is done! I still have a bunch of other unfinished assignments from this past semester that I hope to finish this summer, so there'll be others too. The assignment was to create a "pattern" and break it. So, wanting to do something with animals, I came up with the idea of having a pattern-type landscape of worms strangling a robin. I chose to go slightly more cartoony with this piece than I've probably ever done for an assigned piece, which was challenging because I wanted to make sure that the bird looked like it belonged with the worms. To come up with reference to work from, I found a bait and tackle shop and bought 3 dozen worms. I cleaned the dirt off of them under the sink and started arranging them on a board so that it would look like there was a fairly deep sea of worms. I quickly made a small bird out of a kneaded eraser so that I could wrap the worms around something, and later I sculpted a larger robin out of sculpey, photographed it under the same lighting, and then resized it in Photoshop and worked from that bird. Done in acrylic tube paints on gessoed crescent watercolor board 115.

This is amazingly hilarious! Early worms get the bird!
It's very well painted. The worms actually look very attractive in their texture and color. They have a sort of slimy beauty because of all of the colors that can be seen on them. The shadow work is excellent, giving the piece an immense amount of depth and adding to the sense of humorous drama.
Great job! This is really something special!

Really funny. The expression on the bird is nicely done and you used an nice range of colours.
Although, the beak looks a bit off. maybe I'm just too tired.
Overall really good though!
I agree about the beak. Unfortunately, after I sculpted and took photos of the bird, I realized that the shaped of it wasn't enough like a robin's, so I kind of made up something different and seem to have gotten the angle a bit wrong. Oh well. I'll know what to do better next time. Thanks for the compliments!
Excellent job. That bird looks truly terrified (as it should be!) I love the range of tones you used on the worms. Major props to you for going the extra mile and buying worms/modelling the bird to get this to look right.
When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
A Special Collection of photographs i found this month that still haunts my mind. Show them some love There are always some i can`t include due to space, i try to make the features under 50 deviations to give them better exposure
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
